Digitale Aufrüstung: BND will soziale Netzwerke in Echtzeit ausforschen (SpOn)

Der Bundesnachrichtendienst will sofort wissen, was getwittert und gepostet wird: Um soziale Netzwerke in Echtzeit ausforschen zu können, rüstet der Geheimdienst laut “Süddeutscher Zeitung” digital auf – und investiert dafür 300 Millionen Euro. (…)

Secrets, lies and Snowden’s email: why I was forced to shut down Lavabit (The Guardian)

(…) If my experience serves any purpose, it is to illustrate what most already know: courts must not be allowed to consider matters of great importance under the shroud of secrecy, lest we find ourselves summarily deprived of meaningful due process. If we allow our government to continue operating in secret, it is only a matter of time before you or a loved one find yourself in a position like I did – standing in a secret courtroom, alone, and without any of the meaningful protections that were always supposed to be the people’s defense against an abuse of the state’s power.

In Apple’s Mail.app, there is no regular way to delete an e-mail, without sending it to the trash folder first. That sucks, because you either need to delete them there manually a second time or regularly empty the trash folder.

But you can just “Cut”, as in “Cut and Paste” the whole e-mail, without pasting it anywhere. If you do that, the e-mail is immediately deleted from your Inbox or whatever folder it was in. You even have a small backup: Should you accidentally delete the wrong e-mail, you can just paste it back in.

Princeton Study: U.S. No Longer An Actual Democracy (TPM):

A new study from Princeton spells bad news for American democracy—namely, that it no longer exists.

Asking “[w]ho really rules?” researchers Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page argue that over the past few decades America’s political system has slowly transformed from a democracy into an oligarchy, where wealthy elites wield most power.

Using data drawn from over 1,800 different policy initiatives from 1981 to 2002, the two conclude that rich, well-connected individuals on the political scene now steer the direction of the country, regardless of or even against the will of the majority of voters. (…)
